Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Key Cards (Deck Building Strategy)

Image

By Sean Effendi (KuroNekoXIII6)

As we know, the English version of 「Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica」(Puella Magi Madoka Magica) booster box will be releasing on May 31.  Many new players will be buying many of these boxes to make their very first Weiss Schwarz but at the same time many might be confused on how to even make a deck.  I personally tell new players to start off with their favorite anime series (if in WS) and pick a specific character they like from that series and try to build around that character but because Madoka will be the only booster box that will be out until 「Sword Art Online」(Release: July 19, 2013) , players don’t have many options unless they buy Japanese cards.  Putting that aside, I’m going to be talking about some key cards for those who plan on making a Madoka deck, so let’s start that contract!

For those who don’t know, all five mahou shoujos from the series are in the set and have their specific colors (character color list below):

Mami – Yellow
Madoka / Homura – Green
Kyoko – Red
Sayaka – Blue

There are many different ways to make a deck from this set.  You have the option to either focus on only one color or mix colors.  For example, if you want to make a Mami deck than you will only focus on yellow but to make this deck better you would want to put in cards from different colors.

So let’s start off with some early game level 0 cards that should help out in most Madoka decks.

LEVEL 0

A10523_I1

MM/W17-032 U: Confronting Walpurgis Night, Madoka
Green / Level: 0 / Cost: 0 / Trigger: None
Power: 2000 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic>
—————————————————————
[C] If you have 2 or fewer other characters, this gains +1500 Power.

This card is basically a beater for level 0.  It is always good to have strong cards on the field to maintain field presences.  This card can actually go up to 4500 if you have 2 support cards that give +500 power, 「Making Contract, Kyubey」, in the back stage making it even stronger.  So your opponent has the option to either wait until level 1 to bring out a stronger card to defeat it or use a suicider card to kill it.

A10587_I1

MM/W17-072 C: Farewell on the Subway Platform, Kyoko
Red / Level: 0 / Cost: 0 / Trigger: None
Power: 2000 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic> <Sweets>
——————————————————————–
[A] When this card becomes reversed, if the level of its battle opponent of this is 0 or lower, you may reverse that card.

Cards like this which I call suiciders are staple in any deck.  Why I say this is because it can basically kill any card on the field as long it has the same level unless the other card has some kind of effect that doesn’t allow the effect to go through.  But like I explained earlier, cards like this can help kill off strong cards such as the Madoka that becomes 3500.  Suiciders are a great way to take back control in early game.

A10329_I1

MM/W17-084 R: Admiration for Mami, Sayaka
Blue / Level: 0 / Cost: 0 / Trigger: None
Power: 1500 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic> <Love>
——————————————————-
[A] When this card is placed from hand to the stage, look at the top card of your library and put it either on top or bottom of the library.
[A] When this card attacks, reveal the top card of your library. If that card is a <Magic> character, put in your hand and discard a card from your hand to the waiting room.  (Otherwise put the card back where it was)

A10312_I1

MM/W17-003 R: Making Contract, Kyubey
Yellow / Level: 0 / Cost: 0 / Trigger: None
Power: 500 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Alien> <Magic>
—————————————————–
[C] All your other <Magic> characters gain +500 power.
[C] When you pay for the CHANGE cost of your characters, you may put a marker from under this card to the waiting room in place of 1 stock.
[A] When this card is placed from hand to the stage, put the top card of your library under this card as a marker.

These two cards above combo together very well.  Before you play 「Make Contract, Kyubey」you would play 「Admiration for Mami, Sayaka」first to top check and make sure that card isn’t a climax because you don’t want your climax stock under kyubey.  Even though you are going to pay the marker out later in the game it is still best not to have it under him so you can keep tract of your climaxes.  After you decide to either leave the card on top of your deck or put it on the bottom you would play 「Make Contract, Kyubey」and put the top card under it preparing for CHANGE.

「Admiration for Mami, Sayaka」also has the effect where you can exchange a card.  If for some reason you don’t have 「Make Contract, Kyubey」you can always use the effect to drop a climax card from hand to filter for better cards.

A10317_I1

MM/W17-024 R: Watching Over, Homura
Green / Level: 0 / Cost: 0 / Trigger: None
Power: 2500 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic> <Time>
———————————————-
[S] BRAINSTORM [(1) Rest 2 of your characters] Reveal the top 4 cards of your library and put it in the waiting room. For each climax card revealed by this effect, search your library for up to 1 <Magic> character, reveal it, and put it in your hand. Shuffle your deck.

Another staple card for any WS deck.  A card I like to call “Brainstormer” is a card which will mil your deck for a climax card but in exchange you will gain something.  Even though there are different types of brainstormers this specific card allows you to search your library to gain a character card.  Basically you can search out out the missing 「Make Contract, Kyubey」or you can search out a card that will help you out later in the game.  In Yu-Gi-Oh! terms, I guess you can say this is like a “Lightsworn” card.

A10324_I1

MM/W17-063 R: Sharing Apples, Kyoko
Red / Level: 0 / Cost: 0 / Trigger: None
Power: 500 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic> <Sweets>
————————————————-
[C] All your other “Second-year Student of Mitakihara Middle School, Sayaka” gain +1000 Power.
[A] BOND / [(1)] “Second-year Student of Mitakihara Middle School, Sayaka”  (If you pay the cost you can put “Second-year Student of Mitakihara Middle School, Sayaka” from the waiting room to your hand)

If you plan on making a Kyoko / Sayaka deck than this is a must put in level 0 card.  You can use this card to salvage 「Second-year Student of Mitakihara Middle School, Sayaka」(which is a vanilla level 1 / cost 0: 5500 card) if you don’t have one in your hand.  Not only that, this card gives 「Second-year Student of Mitakihara Middle School, Sayaka」the +1000 power boost so you can have a 1/0 7500 card on the field which can help you control the level 1 game.  Sadly, this card only gives the boost to a specific card but you mainly want this combo for level 1.

LEVEL 1

A10589_I1

MM/W17-074 C: Kyoko who Finally Arrived
Red / Level: 1 / Cost: 0 / Trigger: None
Power: 1500 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic> <Sweets>
—————————————————
[S] [Counter] BACK-UP 1500, Level 1 [Discard this card from hand to the waiting room]

Yet another staple in any deck, counters are always good to have to keep your cards alive.  In Madoka, level 1 cards in this set are already strong so a no cost counter that gives +1500 is best because you want to keep your stock for future plays during your game.  But for some reason let’s say you always have a climax stock in stock and you want to pay it out, than I suggest replacing this 1/0 1500 counter with a level 1 counter that cost stock.

A10595_I1

MM/W17-094 C: Second-year Student of Mitakihara Middle School, Sayaka
Blue / Level: 1 / Cost: 0 / Trigger: None
Power: 5500 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic> <Love>

For those playing a Kyoko / Sayaka deck, than this card will basically be your main level 1 card.  Gaining power from the 「Sharing Apples, Kyoko」which can go up to 7500 power will help you take control of the level 1 game.

A10318_I1

MM/W17-025 R: Hidden Feelings, Homura
Green / Level: 1 / Cost: 0 / Trigger: None
Power: 6000 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic> <Time>
———————————————–
[C] If you have 2 or fewer <Magic> characters, you cannot play this card from hand.

If you are going to run a decent amount of green in your deck or planing to play a Madoka / Homura deck than this card is a good level 1.  What makes this card good is that it is a 6000 power beater that doesn’t cost stock.  The only requirement is that you have at least 2 <Magic> characters on the stage which is basically all your character cards.  If you have 2   「Make Contract, Kyubey」than you have a 1/0 7000 beater.

A10319_I1

MM/W17-026 R: Magical Girl of the Bow, Madoka
Green / Level: 1 / Cost: 1 / Trigger: None
Power: 6500 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic>
———————————————-
[C] If there are 4 or more cards in your stock, this card gains +1000 Power.

Another good green level 1 card for those who plan on using green.  You should have at least 4 stock before you hit level 2 so when you play this card it will get the 1000 power boost.  If you don’t have the fourth stock, its OK.  You can play this card and when you go into attack phase, attack with your other cards first to gain the the 4th stock.

LEVEL 2

A10535_I1

MM/W17-070 U: Kyoko in the Back Alley
Red / Level: 2 / Cost: 1 / Trigger: Soul
Power: 4000 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic> <Sweets>
——————————————–
[C] ASSIST All your characters in front of this gain +1000 power.
[A] CHANGE [(1) Put this card in the waiting room] At the beginning of your Draw Phase, you may pay the cost. If so, choose a “Sakura Kyoko” in your waiting room and put it in the slot this was in.

A10320_I1

MM/W17-027 R: Wavering Feelings, Madoka
Green / Level: 2 / Cost: 1 / Trigger: Soul
Power: 5000 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic>
————————————————–
[C] ASSIST All your characters in front of this card gain +X Power. X = 500 times the level of the character.
[A] CHANGE [(1) Put this card in the waiting room] At the beginning of your Draw Phase, you may pay the cost. If so, choose a “Ultimate Madoka: in your waiting room and out it in the slot this was in.

Depending what character or color you are focusing on in your deck, you will either run one of the two.  This is also where 「Make Contract, Kyubey」comes into play because instead of paying the one stock these 2 cards make you do to CHANGE you can use the marker from under 「Make Contract, Kyubey」instead so you can keep your stock to use for other big plays.  If you plan on changing into the level 3 cards than it is best to place these cards in the back stage so they won’t get killed (they are support cards anyway so why not leave them in the back stage).

A10537_I1

MM/W17-078 U: A Magical Girl Appears
Red / Level 2 / Cost: 1 / Trigger: None
Event
—————————————-
Choose up to 2 characters in your waiting room and return them to your hand, choose a card in your hand and put it in the waiting room.

This event card allows you to salvage 2 cards in exchange of 1 stock and a card from hand.  So let’s say you don’t have the level 3 cards in your hand such as Sayaka and Kyoko.  You can use this card to salvage both cards and than once you hit level 3 you can flood the field and start your attack.  If you need to brainstorm or need a support card to make your cards stronger than you also have that option with this card.

A10564_I1

MM/W17-098 U: Sayaka’s Wish
Blue / Level: 2 / Cost: 1 / Trigger: None
Event
——————————————
[Counter] Choose 1 of your characters with “Sayaka” in the name and put it in the waiting room. If so, return the top card of your clock to your hand, and send this to memory.

Probably the best counter in this set.  If you are running Sayaka, than you must run this card.  When your opponent is attacking you can use this card to heal off one card making your opponent needing more soul to hit for game.  This card also allows you to kill off a Sayaka card opening up a slot making your opponent attack for more soul.  For example, if  you are at only 1 damage away from loosing you can make your opponent attack the open slot for 1 or 2 damage more giving you the small chance of canceling with a climax.  This card is also an anit card for Rewrite decks because in Rewrite, there is a card called, 「”Charismatic Witch-Sama” Akane」which has an effect: “When a card in either player’s clock is moved to the waiting room due to an effect of a card of its owner’s, that player may put the top 2 cards in their stock into the waiting. If not, that player puts the top card of their library in the clock”.  So instead of going to the waiting room the card that is healed off goes to hand so the Rewrite card’s effect does not affect.

A10526_I1

MM/W17-035 U: Time-Traveling Backwards, Homura
Green / Level: 2 / Cost: 1 / Trigger: Soul
Power: 7500 / Soul: 1
Traits: <Magic> <Time>
———————————————————–
[A] When this card is placed from hand to the stage, if there are 5 or fewer cards in your library, return all your cards in your waiting room to the library. If so, shuffle your library, and choose 1 of your “Madoka, Fate’s Final Destination”. Put up to 2 cards from top of your library under that character as a marker and all your characters gain +2000 power for the turn.

This card is good in the situations where you don’t have climaxes in your library to cancel with for your opponent’s next turn.  It is also a card that prevents taking refresh damage.  Even though this card’s effect says you can search 1 「Madoka, Fate’s Final Destination」, I wouldn’t run it because you don’t your climaxes going under it as markers.  You just want to keep them in the library so you can cancel your opponent’s attack.

LEVEL 3

A10311_I1

MM/W17-082 RR: Miki Sayaka
Blue: Level: 3 / Cost: 2 / Trigger: Soul
Power: 10000 / Soul: 2
Traits: <Magic> <Love>
—————————————————-
[C] For each other <Magic> character you have, this card gains +500 power.
[A] When this card is placed from hand to the stage, you may put the top card of your clock in the waiting room.
[A] When this card is reversed in battle, send this card to memory.

This level 3 Sayaka basically becomes very strong as long as you have a full stage and on top of that you get to heal of clock giving you that extra chance on surviving.  The only thing is that this card goes straight to memory (out of the game) after it is reversed which isn’t a bad thing but you would rather put this into waiting room so you can salvage it and use it to heal the next time you play it so to prevent it from going to memory you would use 「Sayaka’s Wish」to kill this card off to heal.

A10309_I1

MM/W17-062 RR: Sakura Kyoko
Red / Level: 3 / Cost: 2 / Trigger: Soul
Power: 10000 / Soul: 2
Traits: <Magic> <Sweets>
——————————————–
[A] When this card is placed from hand to stage or via CHANGE to the stage, you choose a <Magic> character in your waiting room and return it to your hand.
[S] [(1) Rest 2 of your characters] This card gains +2000 power and “[A] When the battle opponent of this card becomes reverse, you may pay the cost and put that character on top of the opponent’s library for the turn.

The other level 3 if you are playing a Kyoko / Sayaka deck.  Why is this card so good? Well thats because after you use the 「Sayaka Wish」and level 3 heal combo, you can use this card to salvage the level 3 Sayaka next turn and bring out that Sayaka for the extra heal.  Once you are in attack phase you can use this card’s other effect to top deck a the opponent’s card so you can try and guarantee 1 damage for your next card’s attack.  This card is really good when your opponent is 1 damage away from loosing because you can try and side attack your way through for 1 damage or attack with a card that only has 1 soul and pray that you don’t trigger.

A10323_I1

MM/W17-030 R: Ultimate Madoka
Green / Level: 3 / Cost: 2 / Trigger: Soul
Power: 10000 / Soul: 2
Traits: <Magic>
———————————————-
[A] When this card is placed from hand to stage or via CHANGE to the stage, you may put the top card of you clock into your waiting room.
[A] [Send this card to memory] When “Madoka’s Wish” is placed in the Climax Zone, you may pay the cost. If so, search your library for up to 1 “Continue to fight, Homura” and put it in the slot this card was in. Shuffle your library, and that character gains +3000 power until the end of your opponent’s next turn.

A10527_I1

MM/W17-036 U: “Continue to Fight” Homura
Green / Level 3 / Cost: 2 / Trigger: Soul
Power: 10000 / Soul: 2
Traits: <Magic> <Time>
——————————————————
[C] RECOLLECTION If “Ultimate Madoka” is in your memory, this card gains +1500.
[A] When this card is front attacked, look a the top card of your library. Put that card either on top of your library or waiting room.

You will definitely need both of these cards to make a strong green deck.  These 2 cards are the key to your victory because one: Ultimate Madoka heals and it allows you to compress your deck by searching out 「”Continue to Fight” Homura」to the field as long you use the climax combo.  Second: This card also gains +1500 power making it at least 14500 if you have 2「Wavering Feelings, Madoka」but it is 15500 when you use the climax combo for 「Ultimate Madoka」.  During your opponent’s attack phase, you can top check to see if you have a climax or not and if not just ditch the card to your waiting room giving yourself a higher chance to cancel.

CLIMAX CARDS

A10601_I1

MM/W17-055 CR: Madoka’s Wish
Trigger: Gold Bar
[C] All your characters gain +1000 Power and +1 Soul

The climax card that goes with the 「Ultimate Madoka」combo.  You will be needing this if you want to pull of the combo.

A10607_I1

MM/W17-079 CR: Sayaka vs Kyoko
Trigger: Gate
[C] All your characters gain +1000 Power and +1 Soul

Another staple card for any deck that allows you to salvage cards from waiting room.

There are some cards I didn’t mention such as the level 3 Mami or the 2/1 yellow event, 「Griefs Seed」.  I believe the level 3 Mami is only good for healing and as for 「Griefs Seed」it is only useful if you have a lot of yellow cards in your deck.  There is also the 1/1 green event card that allows you to search for a <Magic> character from your library but you are better off running other event cards but if you are running the Madoka / Homura deck than I would suggest you put it in.

Well that is basically it.  If you guys have something to say please do comment and tell me your opinion.  Also please do tell me if you think there are some other key cards in this set that Madoka players can use in their decks.

  1. ^^ What he said ^^

For instance, Lv 3, 1/0 5k to 7k, 3k Counter, Grief Seed, 2/1 7.5 to 11.5k when facing Lv 3s, 0/0 Search Mami w/Clock Shift. Plenty more to name lol.

  2. MM/W17-025 R: Hidden Feelings, Homura

[C] If you have 2 or fewer characters, you cannot play this card from hand.

I think this card require 3 or more characters before she can play from hand (because if have 2 = can’t play)

but she still be a good LV1 no-cost character for green

because of the overpower and bond pair that can pay 2 more stock for 1 more card from clock
